A woman, her parents and brother were arrested on Tuesday for allegedly murdering their neighbour in Uttar Pradesh’s Maharajganj. Heavy police force has been deployed in the village after local residents protested over the incident. While the woman’s family belongs to an upper caste, the victim was from a backward caste.
The police identified the deceased as Sunil Sharma, 35, a businessman and the son of a former village pradhan. The FIR has been filed against seven people, including the woman Manorama Giri, 28, her parents Virendra Gir and Shakuntala Giri, brother Yashwant Giri alias Munna, elder sister Kanchanlata, Kanchanlata’s husband and a local resident Akash Patel, accusing them of murder and criminal conspiracy.
Officers said Sharma was in a relationship with Manorama for the last eight years but she wanted to snap ties with him since her marriage was fixed. However, Sharma was unwilling, following which the accused killed him, they added.
According to the police, the victim’s father Rajendra Prasad Sharma informed them on Monday that his son did not return home at night and that he suspected that the woman’s family had detained him at their residence.
When the police reached Manorama’s house, her family members staged a protest and did not allow the personnel to enter inside. Additional force was summoned after which the officers searched the house. “The police team found a body inside the house. The victim’s hand was tied with a rope. The police seized the body and sent it for autopsy,” said an officer from the local police station.
The local residents soon staged a protest and gheraoed the house of the accused. The matter was resolved after police officials assured the villagers of strict action against the accused.
