The Bengaluru Rural district police have arrested a 32-year-old man from Kashmir following an allegation of rape and ‘love jihad’ made against him on social media earlier this month. The allegation was made by his colleague, who was his live-in partner from 2018.
The police arrested the man in Kashmir this week and brought him to Bengaluru on Thursday. The man is accused of rape, unnatural sex, criminal intimidation and cheating under the Indian Penal Code and attempting illegal conversion under the Karnataka Protection of Right to Freedom of Religion Act, 2022.
On September 6, a woman had posted an allegation of rape and love jihad on social media, calling the attention of the Karnataka Police. The police tracked her down and registered a complaint based on her statement.
According to the FIR registered on September 14, she met the man in 2018 when they were both colleagues at an IT firm in Bengaluru. The woman alleged she was cheated into entering into a relationship by the man under the promise of marriage. She further alleged that he promised to marry her without any religious compulsions in a civil wedding and the couple began living together.
During the stay together, she said, he forced her to have a sexual relationship and attempted to convert her to another religion as a pre-condition for marriage.
The Bengaluru Rural police dispatched a police team to Kashmir, tracked down the accused and brought him to Bengaluru this week. “He was detained in Srinagar and brought to Bengaluru. The case is under investigation,” a senior Bengaluru Rural district official stated.
