GUWAHATI: In a massive crackdown against child marriage, Assam police arrested over 1,039 men either on charges of marrying girls below the permissible age by law or encouraging or solemnizing child marriages, from the early hours of Tuesday.
It is the second such crackdown launched by the Assam police this year.
The first drive against child marriage was conducted when around 3,000 people out of around 8,000 people named in 4,000 FIRs in February.
Informing the development on his X handle (formerly twitter), chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma wrote that the number of arrests is likely to rise. The drive is underway across the state.
On September 11, Sarma had told the Assam assembly that a total of 3,907 people were arrested in cases related to child marriages in the last five years, of whom 3,319 are facing charges under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, 2012 (POCSO).
