According to the FIR registered in the Sullia police station in Dakshina Kannada district on September 16, Rashid married Misriya seven years ago, on September 8, 2016. He sent her to her native place in October 2022 while she was pregnant with their second child. As domestic disputes continued between them, Rashid allegedly started abusing her through calls and WhatsApp messages on March 12. On June 5 he messaged her asking her to live with her mother and said “talaq” three times, according to the FIR. Three days later, he reiterated that he was divorcing her by saying “talaq” three times.

The FIR was registered under section 4 of the Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Act 2019 and relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code on the basis of a complaint from Misriya.

A police officer said that Rashid works in Abu Dhabi. “Since this is a bailable offence, we will serve a notice at his residence,” the officer added.
