Actor Nakuul Mehta, who has been with now wife Jankee Parekh since he was 18 years old, opened up about the non-traditional gender roles that they embraced in the early years of their relationship. In an interview, Nakuul said that he had minimal savings when they decided to get married, and thanked Jankee for taking a chance on him as a person.
Appearing on the Be a Man Yaar show, Nakuul said that for the first few years of their marriage, Jankee was paying more income tax in a year than he was earning. Talking about their bond, he said, “She’s never made me feel less of a man because I’m not successful, and there have been many parts of my life when I haven’t been…”
He explained, “We were never the traditional man-woman in a relationship. In three-four years of our relationship, she was paying more income tax than I was earning. She comes from a very well-to-do family; I’m from a service class background. We got married, I didn’t have a job. My bank saving were under Rs 1 lakh. She decided to trust in a person, right?”
Nakul said that Jankee has never pushed him to be ‘the husband or the provider’ in their relationship. “In fact, when we started dating, she used to drop me home and then she used to drive home. Whoever had the money on the particular date used to pay. In unspoken ways, Nakuul said, Jankee has taught him to be an equal partner.
Nakuul and Jankee tied the knot in 2012. They welcomed their first child, a boy named Sufi, in 2021. He is best known for starring in the second and third seasons of Bade Achhe Lagte Hain.
