“When are you planning to get married?” If Indian youngsters earned a nickel every time they were posed with this query, they might have enough to fund one of the country’s lunar exploration missions, such as Chandrayaan.
The fixation of Indian families with marriage has long been an intriguing subject, frequently depicted on the silver screen, both in a serious and comedic manner. Gearing up for its release is a Telugu series, Kumari Srimathi, that will also explore this theme in a jovial manner.
Helmed by Gomtesh Upadhye based on the screenplay and dialogues by the show’s creator Srinivas Avasarala, the comedy-drama Kumari Srimathi stars Nithya Menen in the lead role. The series will premiere on Amazon Prime Video on September 28.
Ahead of its digital release, production company Vyjayanthi Network unveiled a teaser of Kumari Srimathi, offering viewers a sneak peek into its world. The 42-second promo video begins with Srimathi (Nithya Menen) entering a house amidst an ongoing wedding ceremony, carrying two large containers, clearly indicating that she’s merely dropping off the items and not there to partake in the wedding.
Watch Kumari Srimathi teaser here:
An elderly woman at the event asks Srimathi, “She is much younger than you. She is getting married. When are you going to invite us to your wedding?”
The promo video then swiftly cuts to Srimathi’s daily life, highlighting that this question is a recurring one. A voiceover character mentions, “How many alliances have we brought her. She doesn’t want US matches. She outright rejects Delhi match,” as Srimathi continues with her routines, paying no heed to these. The teaser also portrays Srimathi as someone who doesn’t tolerate nonsense, earning her the label of being short-tempered.
Towards the end of the teaser, we are taken back to the wedding venue where Srimathi delivers the containers, informing the residents about the amount they owe her. On her way out, she asks the elderly woman, “Mrs Papayamma passed away the other day. She was much younger than you. When are you going to invite us to your funeral?”
Set in a village in East Godavari district of Andhra Pradesh, the series hilariously encapsulates the tribulations in the life of a 30-year-old woman, who challenges stereotypes in a small town riddled with antiquity, news agency PTI reported earlier.
The seven-episode series also features Nirupam, Gautami, Thiruveer, Talluri Rameshwari, Naresh, and Murali Mohan in key roles.
Bankrolled by Early Monsoon Tales, a web division of Vyjanyanthi Entertainments, the series will be available for streaming in Telugu, with dubs in Hindi, Tamil, and Malayalam.

Srimathi’s journey is a celebration of determination, resilience, and the unbreakable bonds of family, producer Swapna Dutt said in a statement issued earlier.
“With a fresh and unconventional plot, ‘Kumari Srimathi’ explores the intricacies of domestic households, breaking the norms of society, and nurturing personal aspirations, all while taking the audience on an emotional and entertaining roller coaster. Firmly rooted in culture with strong familial bonds at the forefront, we are confident that the viewers will find relatability in the characters and the hilarity and enjoy the show as much as we did while filming it,” she added.
