Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis Wednesday said that Mughal emperor Aurangzeb “cannot be the hero of anyone in this country, not even of” people from the Muslim community.

Fadnavis was responding to a demand made by BJP MLA Nitesh Rane Legislative Assembly to form a a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe communal instances that erupted in some parts of Maharashtra after a few youths had kept the pictures of Aurangzeb as their status on social media.

“Several youths put status (of Aurangzeb) in different districts and then riots took place.Who is the mastermind of this? Will an SIT be set up to probe the matter and find out the mastermind behind it? There are a few people in the police department, who could have prevented the riots, but did not take action. Will there be an internal inquiry against them?” Rane asked Fadnavis.

While responding to the question, Fadnavis said: “Although the SIT has not been constituted yet, the Anti Terrorism Squad (ATS) is working on the case, and Intelligence Bureau (IB) is also involved in the investigation. We are gathering more information about it. If necessary, we will appoint an SIT,” Fadnavis said.

He added that in some places, the incident was  deliberately not prevented and if there is any delay in the police action, appropriate measures will be taken against them.

“Aurangzeb cannot be the hero of anyone in this country, not even of Muslims. He invaded this country. He can’t be a hero. Heroes can only be Shivaji Maharaj, Maharana Pratap, and APJ Abdul Kalam,” Fadnavis said.

Stating that nobody from the Muslim community used to glorify the Mughal emperor or even take out a procession with his pictures, he added: “Now suddenly how come these statuses are being kept and being glorified ? Is there any design and specific intent behind it? Is someone deliberately instigating young people to create a rift in society? We have a few inputs on this, but I won’t say that in the House.”

Meanwhile, Fadnavis also told the House that Maharashtra police will be instructed to frame a standard operating procedure (SOP) to handle cases wherein women are duped into marriage outside religion by presenting a fake identity.

Fadnavis was replying to a motion of attention moved by BJP MLA Haribhau Bagde about “Hindu girls being lured by anti-social elements” in Aurangabad district.
