KOLAR: With rain remaining elusive and failure of ragi crop looming large, villagers in Chikkaballapur district are resorting to desperate measures to invoke the gods. At least two instances of villagers marrying minor boys on a full moon day to propitiate rain gods have been reported in the district over the last three days.
At Hirekattigenahalli in Chintamani taluk, villagers performed the ‘marriage’ of two boys on Thursday evening. As things turned out, there was rain in the village in less than half an hour, claimed Manjunath, an agriculturist from the area.
Manjunath said villagers were facing a difficult time owing to failure of rain and shared a strong belief that there will be heavy showers if they performed ‘marriage’ of boys. Thus, two class 5 boys were chosen for the task – one from a backward community was the ‘groom’ and a Dalit boy was the ‘bride’.
The entire village folk assembled for the marriage and all rituals, including tying the mangalsutra, were conducted. Later, ‘aarti’ was performed on the ‘groom’ and ‘bride’ and they were given gifts. The ‘couple’ was richer by Rs 1,600 at the end of the function and they shared the amount, Manjunath said.
According to him, these boys don’t carry the ‘marriage burden’ and go on to lead normal lives later.
On Wednesday night, two minors were made to tie the knot at Mogalakuppe village in Chikkaballapura taluk.
